Having experienced problems with rots in cypripediums in the past,my solution has been to never water from above until very late in the season when all the plant's growth has gone hard. Earlier in the season when plant growth points are just above the surface, all my pots are just dipped in a large container of rainwater. Moisture then rises into the compost from below. Using this method the collar of grit around each growth point never becomes wet, and rots have been eliminated.
