An early record of C. calceolus in Britain is in the Herbal by John Gerard in 1597. I don't have access to the book but it is a collection of notes on plants with medicinal uses. In Europe it appeared in even earlier Herbals ie that by Conrad Gesner in 1561 "Horti Germaniae". This information is from "The Genus Cypripedium" by Dr Phillip Cribb.

I would be keen to hear more about this conservation project. Its much better than reading bad news. Which country are you writing from?

Peter
