Dear Paul,

The most likely reason for this problem is the death of the flower bud in an early stage. This causes a rot inside the bud and destroys most or all of the young leaves before growth emerges in spring. This symptom is common with new plants which are not completely adapted to the new situation, or with plants which do not have optimal conditions. In your case the reason could have been the warm winter. 'Gisela' can withstand severe frost down to -4 °F (-20 °C). Therefore I would not find it necessary to protect this hybrid by overwintering it in the garage.

The only thing you can do is to clean the inside of the bud by removing all rotten parts and prevent it from being filled with water. The plant will remain in the shown stage for the rest of the year and will form a small bud for next year. It is important not to lose the rest of this bud, because this might lead to a rot of the rhizome which would severly threaten the plant's survival.

Sorry for not having better news for you!

Best regards

Michael
