According to my experiences temperatures below +5°C (41 °F) are sufficient for dormancy of Cypripediums. So you can decide on yourself whether your local climate during winter is appropriate for vernalisation or not. Once the shoot has begun to unfold the leaves late frosts might cause some damage. In that stage the shoots need protection during nights with temperatures below freezing point. Unless the shoot bud is still closed it can withstand severe frost without any cover.
