C. japonicum has been successfully grown in USDA zone 5 with no problem. Yes, they are much more cold hardy when compared to C. formosanum.

It is true that the bulk of C. japonicum on the market are wild collected. The only source of plants I know of in the US that are seed grown are the ones offered by Gardens at Post Hill in Morris, CT. I don't think he has any currently available unfortunately. All plants coming from China and Japan are ultimately wild sourced.

One more thing: without a doubt, C. formosanum is a much more forgiving species in cultivation than C. japonicum.
