Does anyone out there have any experience with growing Cyp japonicum? I live in Chicago (zone 5) and just this year really got into growing Cypripedium. I constructed a 12X4 foot raised bed with a soiless mix and already have 15 Cyps (mostly hybrids). I find Cyp japonicum and Cyp formosanum to be so beautiful but talked to someone in Ohio (also zone 5) who said last winter killed most of his Cyp formosanum because of cold. Is Cyp japonicum much more cold hardy? I have a 2 inch woodchip mulch over the bed and plan to cover it with straw next month for added protection. I plan on leaving it up a little longer over the Asian species so they dont prematurly break dormancy. Anyone sharing there experiences about Cyp japonicum (esp cold hardiness) would be greatly appreciated.
