Hi Ross,
Were you poking around the bud to check on it before or just as it broke dormancy? I am finding out that if the bud is touched whether by carefully digging to check up on it, or even farefully with finers or a small tool, deformities will result.
I managed to mutilate a few cyps that way by having checked on them and accidently poked at the bud.
Just a thought!
