Refrigerator vernalization

I'm not sure I can provide the outdoor environmental conditions to grow cyps here in Virginia so I'm considering growing them in pots. I have learned a lot by reading the information in these forums!

My question has to do with the overwintering of plants. When you put them in the fridge, are you depotting them first and only putting the plant in the fridge or are you putting the entire pot in the fridge? (I'm not sure I can successfully negociate enough fridge space for potted plants!)

Also, at the end of the growing season, is the stem of the plant simply cut off or does it die away natually before refrigerator vernalization?

Can anyone recommend a potting mix for reginae, pubescens, or kentuckiense? Those are the ones I'm most interested in. I understand I should consider starting with a hybrid like Gisela (sp?).

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!
