I completley agree with Michael!!! You can really see a lot of Cypripedium making roothairs over their whole surface. So they do take up water and nutrients there. But the roottip is certainly the place where the most uptake takes place. I have also seen Cyps with cut roots grow much smaller in the next year but they can survive. Actually I think that the highest danger for Cypripediums with cut root tips is not a lack of nutrients (I have managed - only once - to pull through a plant that had no roots left by carefuly spraying diluted fertilizer on the leaves! The plants even take up that!) but that fungal infection can enter the wounds where the roottips were cut of. So it certainly isn't good to cut the roots of a Cyprupedium, but it is not a certain killer....
