I think that this is not true. As far as I know, Cyps take up nutrients and water through the whole surface of the roots. However if the roots are damaged or stressed (brown colouration, lack of rhizoids), the uptake of nutrients and water is reduced. This is often the case with plants from the wild as they are often sold. Normally the growth in the following year is markedly smaller and increases only in size in subsequent years if the root system recovers successfully (which is not always the case as pathogens may attack the new root tips and prevent the building up of a healthy root system).
