Pine duff is the collection of decayed pine needles, bark, wood, etc. found underneath pine trees. It is light and fluffy, highly acidic, and fibrous enough that it does not compact even when wet. This is especially the case if the finer particles are sifted out through a screen. I tend to just use window screens for this. This effectively removes all of the particles that can be compacted. I'm not sure why the specific name 'duff' is used but it is essentially pine detritus to use a more technical term.
