For the past 10 years I have made a point of learning how to grow these in pot culture. All of the ones I grow in pots can be grown in the garden, with one caution in regards to formosanum: I live in New England, and while this species is hardy in this climate, I do not think it is a suitable plant for the garden in this area due to the usual Jan-Feb thaw. The thaw lasts about 5-7 days, and formosanum will start to grow and can flower within 14 days. With the return of cold weather, the flower bud is up out of the foliage and will be ruined. The plant survives, but no flower for the year. Yes, I know many are successful with mulching, and in particular on Long Island, but it is easier and more consistant with pot culture.
