To prevent this from happening I now use chicken wire with 1 inch squares inserted in the ground. The mesh is large enough to cover the entire root zone of the plants and the spaces in the chicken wire are large enough to allow the stems to grow through and small enough to prevent digging from rodents. Before using this method, I lost buds to a rabbit one spring a few years ago. The plant was a large clump so it was not set back very badly. In the fall I also place covers made of wire mesh. I leave these until the shoots are a few inches tall in the spring to discourage rodents and then remove them.
